"Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another." Romans 14:19
I heard a pastor once say that the reason there is no growth in a church is because there is a spirit of criticism abiding in the members hearts. That's definitely not what we want.
So what's the opposite of criticizing?
Edifying
Edifying is defined in the Greek as "the act of one who promotes another's growth in Christian wisdom, piety, happiness, holiness". Do we promote another's growth through criticism? Not at all! In fact, we actually stunt the growth because criticism brings along with it discouragement and hopelessness and when feeling that way, it is impossible to grow.
Is that how Jesus works? Although Jesus has every right to criticize us, He never does. Rather, He does all He can to help us overcome our faults and sins. Often times we criticize others based on their dress, way of talking, way of eating, way of raising their children, their personal relationships etc. and we forget that at the end of the day we are no better. And, if we are in a better place in one way or another, then we should do all in our power to help this person overcome the challenges they face rather than talk behind their backs. As Christians we need to pray for people rather than criticize and gossip.
How many of us have been in situations where we leave from a gathering (prayer meeting, church fellowship, supper with friends, celebrations with family etc.) and find ourselves or the people we're with commenting on the behaviours, dress and comments of those we just spent time with. Those who we consider to be close loved ones often!
Now I am not saying there is never any place for rebuking and making others aware of their wrong doing. The Bible teaches us clearly that "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17). But we need to tell others their faults (with love) only if the goal is to help them. And we need to tell them to their face, not behind their backs. Otherwise, it is just good for hurting the other and discouraging them.
And discouragement comes from Satan alone. Ellen White says it perfectly in her book Desire of Ages:
It is Satan's work to discourage the soul; it is Christ's work to inspire with faith and hope. DA 249
So let's not work on his side by gossiping and constantly looking at others faults. Rather let's focus on our own faults that we may go to Jesus for change because we only have the power to change ourselves (along with Christ of course) and no one else. Let's inspire faith and hope in others that despite their faults, they have a Saviour willing to help them. No one is hopeless. Christ is capable of helping all souls. That's the love of God.
Prayer to pray: Dear God, thank you for reminding me that I need to edify my brethren. Not just my brethren, but anyone I meet. The gospel was meant to give hope to others not discourage them. So help me work along side you by edifying those around me. Help me to build others up and have a spirit of love as You do. Thank you God for answering this prayer. In Jesus' name. Amen.
